In 2008 the HSE successfully prosecuted 27 small businesses for failing to train staff to make them aware of possible asbestos risks when carrying out their day-to-day work. This figure is set to rise in 2009 as the legislation changes to enforce stricter controls on the management and surveying of asbestos related materials in the workplace.
The law states that you do not have to remove all the asbestos containing materials (ACM's) from your premises, but they must be properly located, identified and managed. If these procedures are put in place, then the asbestos can be managed and dealt with appropriately and within the safe confines of everyday operations.
As with any hazardous materials in the workplace, if treated and managed correctly, there is no reason why asbestos should become a problem on your premises. Training staff to recognise asbestos areas and report and problems as soon as they arise will help you manage a safe working environment for all concerned.
