Rugeley Power Station

Boiler Cleaning for Outage

In 2010 we were given the opportunity to bring our experience in working on large scale power generation plants to bear on the Rugeley Power Station in the Midlands.

Contracted to the main site contractor, we provided a full internal and external boiler clean for maintenance work during an outage, lasting approximately 7 weeks.

What our customers say …

  • ...this week we had a major spillage if excess of 50ft of coal on the upper levels of the conveyor system, which under normal conditions would have taken over a week to clear. However, after speaking to Pat and Gordon and asking for assistance, the Thomson team were on top of the situation with the area cleared and operational in a couple of days.I have been greatly impresses with their work ethic and if possible could you please pass on my thanks to Pat and his team for all the hard work and in some instances the thankless tasks undertaken with no complaints but total dedication. The station, in my view, would be worse off without the Thomson team.…

  • Project: Airedale Project Sirocco – Asbestos Removal – Existing Offices Following a fire in September 2013, our client Airedale International Air Conditioning Ltd following an agreement with the loss adjusters, decided to demolish and rebuild a new production facility on the existing site. The existing office building forming part of the facility contained asbestos and it was necessary to remove this prior to demolition works commencing.Thomson Ltd were appointed following a competitive tender process and throughout the tender and subsequent negotiations addressed all issues in a very positive and professional manner to the satisfaction of our client. The Thomson team for the project, managed by Steve Pickard, Thomson’s Environmental Director, could not be faulted for their knowledge, experience, application and attention to detail in respect of health and safety.Their willingness to work with the client and project team at all times during the project was exemplary and they are to be congratulated for completing the project on time and within the original contract sum without any issues outstanding at completion.I would therefore have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Thomson Ltd to any client for any future projects involving environmental or asbestos works.…

  • Thomson Ltd completed a major outage on the 16th of August. The outage ran for 24 days and during this time Thomson Ltd worked 24 hours a day to achieve delivery of the project on time. The work was completed a day ahead of schedule and the plant has run at maximum output since that date.Thomson Ltd completed all the set work, and more, on time and in full. They were audited by our Health and Safety team repeatedly during the outage period (as were all contractors on site) and not at any point was a problem found. Their compliance with our site safety rules, permit procedures , the PPE standards required, the confined space procedures in place and the quality of the work delivered was excellent at all times during the project.…

  • You will be aware that today is the last day of the last of our five boilers consecutive major overhauls, which began on 6th January 2014. I am delighted to say that each boilers overhaul ran consistently smoothly and all being completed on or before the programmed date. It is a credit to all the contractors, but particularly Thomson Limited, the major contractor, that through the endeavours of the supervisors and management this was achieved. Thomson Limited personnel worked in the region of 45,000 hours throughout this period without having sustained any injury through accidents while at work. All the Thomson team; Boiler Tube work, Platework, Cleaning, Scaffolding and Insulation performed admirably. The Tube Work team carried out in the region of 2,000 tube butt welds which were subjected to a 5% Radiographic inspection that resulted in barely a handful of weld repairs having been found necessary, a very commendable result. Please pass on my thanks for a job well done to all of your people.…
