The Facts:
Asbestos is more common than many people realise. It can be contained in buildings built up to the year 2000, but the higher risk quantities are usually found in older premises. Many people are under the impression that if there is asbestos present in their premises then they have to remove it - they don't. The HSE states that the Dutyholder only has a duty to manage the asbestos.

The Issues:
If you do have asbestos, then it is important to evaluate the location and extent of it. An asbestos survey is the easiest way to do this, but what about the ongoing management? An asbestos survey should use MDHS100 guidelines to determine the likelihood of asbestos

fibre contamination and recommend a suitable management plan. Any staff who may come into contact with it are fully trained and aware of the safety procedures. The HSE states that:
“Asbestos awareness training is required to be given to employees whose work
could foreseeably expose them to sbestos.In particular, it should be given to all demolition workers and those workers in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades where it is foreseeable that their work will disturb the fabric of the building because ACMs may become exposed during their work”

"The following trades are the most at risk: general maintenance staff; electricians; plumbers; gas fitters; painters and decorators; joiners; plasterers; demolition workers; construction workers; roofers;
heating and ventilation engineers; telecoms engineers; fire and burglar alarm installers; computer installers; architects, building surveyors; shop fitters."
